Wie oft sind Menschen auf Bildern zu glatt, zu schön oder gar mit KI erstellt? Was machen die perfekten Titelbilder auf Magazinen und Co. mit uns? Geschönt wurde freilich schon immer. Das begann schon bei Hofe und das darf die Kunst sicher auch. Meine Interpretation der einstigen dänischen Königin ist ebenfalls zu glatt und zu schön. Möchte den Betrachter neugierig machen, auf ihre spannende und tragische Geschichte…

Was hat diese englische Prinzessin für eine kurze, ungewöhnliche und dramatische Biografie! Nicht einmal 24 Lebensjahre waren Caroline Mathilde vergönnt. Mit nur 15 Jahren wurde sie aus strategischen Gründen mit ihrem 17-jährigen Cousin König Christian VII verheiratet und zur Königin von Dänemark und Norwegen. Christian zeigte wenig Interesse für sie, Caroline gebar dennoch mit nur 16 Jahren den späteren Thronfolger Frederik VI. Mit Skepsis begegnete sie dem neuen Leibarzt des Königs, Johann Friedrich Struensee. Doch der Reformer stieg schnell auf, wurde zum heimlichen Herrscher und eroberte auch Carolines Herz. Christian wusste wohl von der Affäre und eine
Ménage-à-trois entstand. Carolines Selbstbewusstsein wuchs und so sorgte sie für Aufsehen, als sie mit Hosen bekleidet im Herrensattel ausritt. 1771 gebar sie Louise Augusta, vermutlich das Kind Struensees. Die glückliche Zeit endete durch Intrigen für Struensee tödlich und für Caroline mit Scheidung und Verbannung nach Celle. Sie musste beide Kinder zurücklassen. 1775 starb sie und wurde als einzige dänische Königin außerhalb Dänemarks bestattet.

What a short, unusual and dramatic biography this English princess had! Caroline Mathilde was not even granted 24 years of life. At the age of just 15, she was married to her 17-year-old cousin King Christian VII for strategic reasons and became Queen of Denmark and Norway. Christian showed little interest in her, but Caroline gave birth to the future heir to the throne Frederik VI at the age of just 16. She met the king’s new personal doctor, Johann Friedrich Struensee, with skepticism. But the reformer quickly rose through the ranks, became the secret ruler and also won Caroline’s heart. Christian presumably knew about the affair and a ménage-à-trois developed. Caroline’s self-confidence grew and she caused a furor when she rode out in a gentleman’s saddle wearing pants. In 1771, she gave birth to Louise Augusta, who is presumed to be Struensee’s child. The happy time ended fatally for Struensee due to intrigues and for Caroline with divorce and banishment to Celle. She had to leave both children behind. She died in 1775 and was the only Danish queen to be buried outside Denmark.
